Nonresident Returns (Form 1040-NR)

Form 1040-NR returns for people who aren't U.S. residents but earned income in the United States, prepared virtually by an IRS Enrolled Agent.

What We Need

What we need to get started

Here is what to gather. If you don't have a U.S. tax ID yet, we can help you apply for one.

What we need

  • Your passport and visa, and your visa type (F, J, H-1B, and so on)
  • Your SSN or ITIN — we can help you apply for an ITIN if you don't have one
  • The dates you entered and left the U.S. this year
  • Your country of residence, and last year's return if you filed one
  • W-2 from any U.S. employer
  • Form 1042-S for scholarships, fellowships, or treaty-covered income
  • 1099 forms for other U.S.-source income
  • Records of any U.S. investment or property income
  • Any tax-treaty benefit you're claiming — your country and the treaty article
  • State and local taxes paid, and donations to U.S. charities
  • Estimated tax payments you already made

Your days in the U.S. matter: how long you were here can change whether you file as a nonresident at all, so bring your exact travel dates — we'll confirm the right status before filing.

What's included

  • A review of your U.S. income and any treaty benefits
  • Complete preparation of your Form 1040-NR
  • Help applying for an ITIN, if you need one
  • Electronic filing where available, or paper filing when required
  • A copy of the completed return in your secure client portal
  • If we make an error on your return, we fix it

* Please note: preparation timelines begin once all required documents are uploaded to your secure client portal. Not sure what applies to you? We'll walk through it together on a quick phone call.
