Gift Tax Returns (Form 709)

Form 709 gift tax returns, prepared by an IRS Enrolled Agent. Most small gifts need no return at all — we'll help you tell the difference.

What We Need

What we need to get started

This return reports sizable gifts you made during the year. Here is what to gather.

What we need

  • Your name, Social Security number, and address
  • Any prior-year gift tax returns you've filed
  • Whether you're splitting gifts with your spouse
  • For each gift: who received it, your relationship, the date, and a description
  • The value of each gift — amounts for cash, appraisals for property
  • Valuation reports for gifts of stock or business interests
  • Large 529 college-plan contributions
  • Trust documents, if any gifts went into a trust

The yearly free amount: you can give up to a set amount per person each year with nothing to report. Only gifts above that line generally need a return — and even then, most people owe no tax thanks to the large lifetime exemption. Bring the details and we'll sort out what actually needs filing.

What's included

  • A review of the gifts you made during the year
  • Complete preparation of your federal Form 709
  • The gift-splitting election with your spouse, where it applies
  • Tracking of the lifetime exemption you've used
  • Secure filing with the IRS
  • A copy of the completed return for your records
  • If we make an error on your return, we fix it

* Please note: preparation timelines begin once all required documents are uploaded to your secure client portal. Not sure what applies to you? We'll walk through it together on a quick phone call.
